Party Kid Michael Alig Released from Prison After Serving 17 Years for Murder

“Party Kid” Michael Alig was released from prison on May 5 after serving 17 years for the murder and dismemberment of drug dealer “Angel” Melendez. He and a friend murdered Melendez in Alig’s apartment and actually waited 10 days, trying in various ways to hide the smell of the body in the bathtub, before chopping off his legs and putting his body, in a box, into the river.

An episode of the “American Justice” series dealing with the murder –

Joan Rivers once had Alig and his friends on her talk show:

More Throw Back Thursday – George Balanchine Dances (1929)

Courtesy of John Hall of Youtube, this is a small segment of the first talking film made in England, Dark Red Roses (1929), which he choreographed and which he dances along with Anton Dolin and Lydia Lopokova. Here are Mr. Hall’s extensive notes. This was a segment presented in a documentary about Balanchine, and the talking head is actor Frank Langella.

Mr. Hall writes:

I never thought I’d see film of George Balanchine dancing in a professional capacity but yesterday I came across British Director Sinclair Hill’s early talking picture ‘Dark Red Roses’ (1929). And in such good company: Anton Dolin and Lydia Lopokova.

The movie has a ballet sequence within it which is a reflection of the off-stage love triangle between an English sculptor, his wife and a famous cellist. In the dance metaphor, George Balanchine is the husband, Lydia Lopokova the wife and Anton Dolin the lover.

The script came from Leslie Howard Gordon and Harcourt Templeman, as an adaptation of a short story by Stacy Aumonier.

The choreography was produced by George Balanchine.

The off-stage cast included Stewart Rome [David Cardew], Frances Doble [Laura Cardew], Hugh Eden [Anton Falk], Kate Cutler [mother], Una O’Connor [Mrs. Weaks], Sidney Morgan [Tim], Jack Clayton [Jack Cardew] and Jill Clayton [Jill Cardew].

Baseball Rookie Hazing

Every year the Yankee rookies get hazed; they have to dress up in costumes chosen for them and I believe they have to travel and have dinner in them.

Six years ago, Ian Kennedy, Shelley Duncan, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain were the Wizard of Oz:

In 2013 it was teen idol time –

In 2011 the pitchers had to wear pink backpacks to carry their things out to the bullpen:

The 2012 group had a Star Wars theme:

Not be outdone, the Mets are featured in this featurette on rookie hazing, having dressed their rookies as members of a bridal party –

And Manny Ramirez’Japanese team got in on the act – Manny drew the Incredible Hulk costume.
